Field Sobriety Tests
Field Sobriety Tests
A common measurement used to gauge a driver’s level of intoxication is a field sobriety test. This test is used by police officers in the State of Florida to challenge a driver’s coordination, level of alertness and ability to follow directions. Police officers require drivers to perform at least one of the following three tests:
- Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus: You will be instructed to follow a small object’s line of motion with your eyes. If you have trouble following the object or your eyes begin to jerk, it may be taken as a sign of intoxication.
- One Leg Stand Test: You will be instructed to stand with your feet together, arms at your side. Then raise one foot six inches off the ground while counting out loud. The officer is looking to see if you can follow instructions and if you raise your arms, hop, wobble or lose your balance.
- Walk and Turn Test: You will be instructed to walk in a straight line by taking nine heel-to-toe steps, repeating the same action in the opposite direction. The officer will be looking to see if you follow instructions and if you can walk in a straight line and maintain your balance.
